To Parent/Guardian:

Recently, there has been an increase in cases of Influenza, “the flu,” in your child’s school and in the district. While influenza is in season from October to April, it is important we do all that we can to prevent illness and protect others from illness. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), symptoms of seasonal flu include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people report diarrhea and vomiting; these symptoms have been more common in children. To help differentiate, the common cold does not normally have fever or severe illness associated with it.

Prevent the Flu

• Easiest way – get the seasonal flu vaccine every year! Flu shots protect your child and those around him or her!
• Wash hands regularly (with warm water and soap)
• Cover coughs and sneezes – use a tissue if possible, cough/sneeze into elbow
• Have healthy habits – eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep

If You’re Sick

• If your child’s sick, keep them home! The majority of flu illness can be treated at home.
• If symptoms become more severe, seek medical attention.
• During illness, stay away from those who may become ill easily or who are at high risk for complications from flu; continue to cover coughs and sneezes; and wash your hands often.
• Drink clear fluids such as water, broth or sports drinks. There are also electrolyte beverages made for infants to prevent them from becoming dehydrated.
• Get plenty of rest.
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends staying home for 24 hours after fever is gone without using fever-reducing medication.
